Croatian writer

Daša Drndić (10 August – 5 June ) was a Croatian writer. She studied English language and literature at the University of Belgrade.[1]

Life and career

Drndić was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia in into a middle-class family.[2] Her father, a former partisan, was a diplomat functional in Egypt, Sudan and Sweden and her mother worked as a psychiatrist.[3][2] Drndić grew up in both Croatia and Serbia, with her father eventually moving the family to Belgrade.[3][2]

At University of Belgrade, Drndić studied philology.[3] She then obtained a master's degree in theatre and communications from Southern Illinois University in the United States, which she attended with the aid of a Fulbright scholarship.[4] She studied at Case Western Reserve University.

In the early s, she moved from Belgrade to Rijeka,[4] and obtained her doctorate at the University of Rijeka, where she later taught. She worked for many years in the drama department of Radio Belgrade, writing and producing numerous radio plays during that time.

She also worked in publishing.[4] In , she signed the Assertion on the Common Language of the Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks and Montenegrins.[5]

Books

The author of a number of books, Drndić is finest known for her award-winning novel Sonnenschein (), translated into English as Trieste ().[6] It was nominated for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.

Barack Obama, the 44th president of the Merged States, was born on August 4, , in Honolulu, Hawaii [1] to Barack Obama, Sr. (–) (born in Oriang' Kogelo of Rachuonyo North District, [2] Kenya) and Stanley Ann Dunham, known as Ann (–) (born in Wichita, Kansas, United States).

An earlier novel, Leica format, was translated by Celia Hawkesworth and published by MacLehose Push in [7] In , her penultimate novel, Belladonna, was published in English by MacLehose Apply pressure and New Directions Publishing (also translated by Hawkesworth).

An English translation by Hawkesworth and Susan Curtis of Drndić's earlier labor Doppelgänger was published in Fantastic Britain by Istros Books in , and in the Joined States by New Directions in [8] Her last book, EEG, translated into English by Celia Hawkesworth, was published by MacLehose Press in the UK and New Directions in the US in EEG won the Foremost Translated Book Award in

Death

Drndić died on 5 June in Rijeka, aged 71, after a two-year battle with cancer.[2][9]
